Celebrate Oktoberfest
17 Sep 2016, by Make Me Want To Shop Monday inOktoberfest begins September 17 in Munich, Germany!
This year, I am happy to be checking this off the bucket list: I will be at Oktoberfest! As in THE Oktoberfest in Munich with my husband, son and future daughter-in-law (stay tuned for photos)! If you can’t travel across the pond to join in the historic celebrations, then it’s the perfect time to celebrate with an event at your home!
On Saturday, September 17, the Mayor of Munich will be at the Schottenhamel tent in Munich to kick off the official opening ceremonies of Oktoberfest. There, he will tap the first keg of Oktoberfest beer.
But this major event, which is celebrated all over the world, dates back to the 1800s. Traditionally starting the third weekend in September and going through the first Sunday of October, Oktoberfest began with a Royal Wedding on October 12, 1810. Crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, and a celebration that later became known as Oktoberfest ensued for hundreds of years to follow.
Today, Oktoberfest in Munich is the largest festival in the world. The festival features carousels, roller coasters, and fun and enjoyment for visitors of all ages. Also featured is a program of events, including the Grand Entry of the Oktoberfest Landlords and Breweries, the Costume and Riflemen’s Procession, and a concert involving several brass brands.
