Have you ever wondered to yourself, “What exactly is the difference between and interior designer and an interior decorator”? We see both interior designers and interior decorators on HGTV, DIY, and all other home improvement shows, but do we really know the difference between the two professions and what each one has to offer in terms of skill? As someone in the home decorator and staging industry, this is a question that I typically get on the first day of teaching any of my design education courses.

While both interior designers and interior decorators are a valuable asset to their clients and produce high-quality work, there is a difference between them, and we’re here to help you sort it out once and for all!

What is an interior designer?

An interior designer, who has a degree in design, is able to work directly with contractors, architects, and can be hired if you’re thinking of structural changes to your home – such as removing walls or moving plumbing around. So if you want to knock down a few walls between a living room and a kitchen to create a more open space, then an interior designer is probably the way to go. They can set up the work directly with the contractors, go over designs with an architect, and walk you through the process of the entire project.

What is an interior decorator?

Then there’s an interior decorator. This professional works with clients to help with understanding their design and decorating style. If you’re thinking of doing more cosmetic changes to your home, like putting up wallpaper, painting, or getting new furnishings, an interior decorator can help. Decorators work with clients to transform a room to suit the client’s needs and desires, without the structural changes that interior designers do.

As you can tell, both interior decorators and interior designers are important to the industry. If you’re in a position of needing to choose between an interior designer or an interior decorator, there are really only a few things to consider:

• Are you comfortable with that individual?
• Do you feel they are asking you questions that can help them understand not just your home, but your personality and your design style?
• As you excited to meet with them again?

Either one of these professionals can give you the home you dream of, but it’s the relationship aspect of the work that should be considered the most when choosing between an interior decorator and an interior designer.
