Things My Mom Taught Me About Design!

12 May 2017, by Agricola Redesign Staff in Home Decor

Mother’s Day is just a few days away and it’s one of our favorite days of the year as we get to honor the incredible, strong women who raised us!

With this special day just around the corner (literally! It’s Sunday!), I am thinking a lot about my mom, June Mckillop. She’s an amazing woman who gave birth to six children and put up with us along the way! Having six children isn’t always easy but she never let us down!

There were several times that my mom moved us across the country when my dad’s job would transfer him to a new city. Along the way, my mother has taught me so many things about life.

When I reflect back on my 17-year career in design, I have to give a lot of credit to June. My mom always loved style and kept our home on-trend and fashionably chic, even when I know we did not have much for her to work with. She was always painting, rearranging furniture, and working with her accessories in the most unique ways to create fabulous rooms!

My mom used fabric, trim, florals, and whatever else she had on hand – and she never failed to make our homes look beautiful! Along the way, my siblings and I picked up on her home decorating skills so that by our fifth move we could all have our new home properly dressed in under a day.

Today, I ask you to think of all the ways your childhood shaped your style and taught you to love certain design styles or traditions. Design is something we do every day, in many parts of our lives, and it’s always fun to take a step back and think about who and what shaped the way we see design!

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I love you.
