The Secret to a Well-Designed Room

20 Jan 2017, by Agricola Redesign Staff in Home Decor

The secret to a well-designed room is knowing the purpose and function of the room!

Have you ever been to a friend’s house, or watched HGTV, and wondered how in the world they get the home to look to great? As professional redesigners, we love being able to look back on the room designs we’ve done and being in love with the results.

And while designing a room comes easily to us (that’s why we professionals got into the biz, right?) it isn’t always easy for everyone else. If there’s one secret we can share to creating a well-designed room, it’s this: Form follows function.

Every room in a home has a design form. However, this can’t quite be achieved until one knows how the room needs to function. Each room in your house has a different purpose, it serves you in one way or another, even if you don’t quite realize it. Some will repurpose a dining room for one reason or a spare bedroom for another.

When it comes to designing a room, we know to ask our clients tons of questions on how they want a room to feel. And often, with this answer, we’ll figure out how the room needs to function for that client as well.

While rooms should be beautiful, they also need to function for a family’s needs. So, a room isn’t going to feel like home, or look well-designed, unless it’s serving its purpose.

Here area couple of tips to consider when designing a room:

1. What’s the purpose of this room?

Whether it’s watching television, catching some Zs, entertaining guests, or working from home, it’s important to know what you’ll be doing in a room. Having a multi-purpose room may seem like a good idea, and it can be done if you make the largest portion of the room for the rooms main purpose. A smaller portion of the room can be dedicated to a second purpose like reading or music.

2. How do you want your room to feel?

Do you want the room to feel cozy, calming, cheerful, welcoming, formal, or energetic? The way you want a room to feel will be a significant dictator in how you design it. The room may require a rug or dimmer lighting while another may need to have less window dressings to let in natural light. Either way, you’ll want to consider this to help you design a room you will love.

When you ask yourself these questions, and come up with the answers to them, you’ll have a perfect start to designing a room that the entire family will love.
